Chapter Summary 34: And Last

In this chapter, they return to England.

The very next morning everyone, except the mutineers, work on loading the boat with the treasure. After the gold is loaded, they decide to leave the mutineers on the island with supplies. As they are sailing out, they see the mutineers on the shore, crying for help. After the mutineers realize they are not coming back, one of them shoots and shoots. When they eventually no longer see the island, they ride to Spanish America as England is not close enough for them to reach with the supplies. While there, Silver takes a small portion of the treasure and leaves with a note. They then go back to England and they each spend their share of the treasure in different ways. However, Jim can still hear Captain Flint singing in his ears, “Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!”

The voice continues on to say, “Darby M’Graw! Darby M’Graw! Darby M’Graw!  Fetch aft the rum, Darby!” Silver tries to raise the men’s spirits and after much trial and error, he convinces them that it is Ben Gunn. Silver says that he could tell that the doctor wanted Jim to run for it. As they are having breakfast, Jim sees the men being wasteful and throwing leftover food into the fire. He could see why they would not have survived long if the doctor hadn’t given them supplies. After breakfast, Silver says they are going to go treasure hunting and they are taking Jim along. Jim thinks about how Silver would betray him any second if was beneficial to him. They follow the instructions on the map and as they follow the instructions they find a human skeleton. Then after raising the men’s spirits, Silver continues to follow the map.
