In this chapter, the Black Dog and the captain clash.
Following the events in chapter 1, Jim's father gets sick from the cold winter weather and Jim and his mother must take care of the shop. Also, one day when the captain goes to the beach, an odd man comes looking for the captain calling him "Bill". He surprised the captain and is revealed to have the nickname "Black Dog." The captain and the "Black Dog" then argue like mad, saying oaths, and a sword fight ensues. Right when the "Black Dog" is about to die he escapes wounded. Then, suddenly, the captain has a stroke from too much rum, but Dr. Livesey manages to come by in the nick of time to save him.
