Chapter Summary 30: On Parole

In this chapter, the doctor comes.

Jim awakens the next morning to someone saying that the doctor is coming. After Silver talks to the doctor, the doctor requests to meet with Jim alone. After Jim promises not to run away, the doctor and Jim meet. As the doctor talks to Jim, the doctor tells Jim to run away, but Jim says he can’t go back on his word. However, Jim does tell the doctor where he left the ship, as well as the rest of his adventures. After giving Silver a few pieces of advice, the doctor leaves.

Chapter Summary 29: The Black Spot Again

In this chapter, Silver gets the black spot.

After the men get back from their council, they give Long John Silver the black spot made from a piece of the Bible. On the back of the black spot, it says “depose.” Silver asks why they deposed him and they make four points on why they did so. Silver then argues why those are not good points.  After showing the men that he has a treasure map, the men no long want to depose him. After a drink, all the men, including Jim, go to sleep. 

Chapter Summary 28: In the Enemy’s Camp

In this chapter, the Long John Silver protects Jim.

There are six mutineers in total. Captain Silver explains why they are there. Jim then declares that he was the one that cut the ship loose and he was the one who overheard Silver.  He then also declares   that if they spare him, he will help save them in court or he says that they can kill him and get nothing. The crew then tries to kill Jim, but Silver protects him. Captain Silver and his crew then argue over this until the men call for a council. The captain then explains to Jim why he did this.

Chapter Summary 27: “Pieces of Eight”

In this chapter, Jim walks into a trap.

After Jim shudders violently, the knife falls out and Jim gets rid of the other dead man. After seeing that the sails could be dangerous, Jim quickly cuts them. Jim then gets off and leaves the ship. Jim decides to go home to the stockade. Jim walks all through the night until he gets to the stockade and hears his friends snoring. When Jim goes into the cabin, a voice comes forth and spouts forth, “pieces of eight, pieces of eight, pieces of eight.” Jim quickly realizes that it is Silver’s parrot. All of the men spring up and block the exits. 

Chapter Summary 26: Israel Hands

In this chapter, the man betrays Jim and Jim kills him.

The man tells Jim how to sail the ship and then they both set down for a meal. The man then expresses how he thinks the ship is unlucky. The man then asks Jim to go down and get a bottle of wine. Jim is suspicious because the man has never seen wine. Jim goes down pretending like he is getting wine and peeks on the man. He finds that the man had risen to his hands and knees and got out some rope, a knife, and a dirk. He then sits back down in the same place and Jim goes and gets the wine. After talking for a little while, they attempt to land the ship. The man then pulls out his dirk and tries to kill Jim. Jim quickly lets go of the wheel and backs away. Jim takes a pistol from his pocket and pulls the trigger.  However, the pistol does nothing. After a short standoff, the ship tilts sharply and they both fall into the water. Jim then quickly climbs up the mast and the man throws the dagger just below Jim. Then Jim quickly primes his pistols and aims them at the man. Jim then says that if the man moves at all, he will kill him. Then suddenly, the dagger hits Jim in the shoulder pinning him to the mast. Then suddenly, both pistols go off and fall from Jim’s hands.  The man falls into the water.

Chapter Summary 25: I Strike the Jolly Roger

In this chapter, Jim helps an almost dead mutineer aboard the ship.

Then after nearly getting tossed into the sea, Jim manages to get on the deck. Jim sees that there are two watchmen still on the deck. However, one is dead and the other is almost dead. When Jim approaches them, the one who isn’t dead lets out a low moan and turns partly around. He only manages to utter one word – “brandy.” Jim then goes down to the cellar and finds some brandy for the man and some food for himself. After having much brandy, he speaks again and says that if the doctor had been aboard, he would have been okay. Jim then tells him that he is taking possession of the ship and he wants to be called captain. The man then asks if Jim would like to go to shore and proposes that they make a deal and Jim agrees. As part of the deal, Jim goes and gets a handkerchief and ties it around the big cut that the man has.

Chapter Summary 24: The Cruise of the Coracle

In this chapter, Jim tries to land.

After spending a night on the boat, Jim wakes up to find himself on the southwest side of Treasure Island. At first, Jim thinks he should go paddle in and land, but then he quickly denounces the idea and decides to go around the island northward until he got to the Cape of the Woods. After figuring out how to work the boat, Jim manages to move in closer to the Cape of the Woods. However, he starts to get thirsty and he sees the ship. He decides to try and get on the ship. When he gets close to the ship, he is almost sunk down with the boat when the ship rams the boat, but he manages to get on the ship.

Chapter Summary 23: The Ebb-tide Runs

In this chapter, Jim gets rid of the mutineer-controlled ship.

Jim finds out the boat is quite safe for him. However, it is very hard to maneuver because it keeps going in circles. Eventually Jim gets to the ship and tries to cut the anchor, but then realizes that the rope might snap back and kill him because it is very tight. Jim severs it until it is down to one string and rides away to let the tide do the rest. After a while, Jim eventually falls asleep. 

Chapter Summary 22: How My Sea Adventure Began

In this chapter, Jim runs away in Ben Gunn’s boat

Since the mutineers didn’t return, everyone spent time treating the wounded and getting dinner. One of the men who had his gun taken and stunned by the pirates dies over night. The captain was slightly wounded from the conflict. After dinner, the doctor went to the northern side of the trees to meet Ben Gunn. However, this makes Jim envy him. Eventually Jim gets so envious, he decides to make a bold move, taking everything he might need. Then after waiting for the right opportunity, Jim makes a bolt for the thickest trees and heads off to find the white rock under which the boat is hidden. On the way there, Jim hears an unearthly scream, which he realizes is Long John Silver’s parrot, Captain Flint. When Jim finds Ben Gunn’s boat, he sees that it is very lopsided and not that well-built and it is small. However, it is extremely light and portable. Jim then carries it to the water.  Through much work, he gets in.

Chapter Summary 21: The Attack

In this chapter, the good hands and the mutineers battle fiercely.

When Silver disappeared the captain quickly criticizes the men for not being at their positions and then he asks them to get prepared to fight. After they get ready, they wait and wait until an hour passes. Then suddenly one of their men fire again and again. The enemy shoots back many times. As the battle continues, three of the mutineers fall. Then more shots are fired and four pirates come up the mound to the log house. Then a pirate grabs one of their muskets taking it through the loop hole and stunning the man he took it from. As more people continue to fire the log house fills with smoke and people get confused. Then the captain tells the men to bring out their cutlasses and fight them in the open. After the mutineers retreat, the captain figures out that they still have four people left against nine people. 

Chapter Summary 20: Silver’s Embassy

In this chapter, Silver offers a truce.

Jim sees that there are two men – one of them is holding a flag and the other is Long John Silver. After hearing Long John Silver’s offer, they utterly reject the offer. Silver gets really mad and promises to kill them the next hour. He then leaves the stockade.

Chapter Summary 19: Narrative Resumed by the Jim Hawkins: The Garrison in the Stockade

In this chapter, Jim goes to the stockade and he helps make a plan to beat the mutineers.

When Jim saw the British flag, he thought it was the mutineers, but then Ben Gunn told him it was definitely his friends because Long John Silver would fly the Jolly Roger. When Jim Hawkins tries to go in the stockade, Ben Gunn says he won’t go in the stockade until Jim’s friends give their word. Suddenly a cannon ball comes crashing down near them and the cannon balls keep on raining down for an hour. They have to constantly move from hiding place to hiding place. He sees their ship, but with the Jolly Roger flying at the peak. He then sees men demolishing the boat on the beach. Jim then runs towards the stockade, but sees the white rock that Ben had talked about.  He had his ship under it. He then continues until he gets to the stockade. When Jim gets back in the stockade with his friends, he tells them his story and looks around the stockade. The captain makes all of the men at the stockade take turns keeping watch. Two of the men gather firewood. Two other men dig graves for their fallen comrades. The doctor cooks. Jim is made the sentry. The captain helps them in any way he can. Before they have supper, they bury the dead man. They decide that their best hope is to kill the mutineers until they either surrender or run away. The next morning Jim hears someone say that the mutineers are bringing a flag of truce with Long John Silver himself.

Chapter Summary 18: Narrative Continued by the Doctor: End of the First Day’s Fighting

In this chapter, the good hands and the mutineers fight and the first good man.

They ran as fast as they could to the stockade while the mutineers’ voices seemed to draw nearer. They quickly prepared for battle with the mutineers. Then they saw the mutineers and fired. After that they walked outside of the stockade to see that a man was dead. Somebody then shot at the doctor but hit another person.  The doctor and the squire tried to shot back but they didn’t have anything to aim at. They then took the injured man back in the stockade to die. After the man died, the captain revealed that he had many different items. The captain asks the doctor how long it will be until the consort will arrive. The doctor said it would be a few months and then the captain said that they had very low rations. Then the cannon ball fires and goes above the roof. The squire thought that it might be wise to take down the flag, which it what the enemy was aiming at, but everyone else agreed not to take it down. The shelling continues throughout the evening. After a while they decided to go get their provisions which would have been likely uncovered by then, but it was unless because the mutineers had captured the provisions already. Then they spot Jim Hawkins climbing over the stockade.

Chapter Summary 17: Narrative Continued by the Doctor: The Jolly-boat’s Last Trip

In this chapter, the good hands have their boat sunk and lose some of their provisions.

They then have a few problems getting back to the proper landing point. They then realize that the ship’s cannon is being aimed at their boat and try as they might, they get hit. The boat and half of their provisions are lost, but everyone survives.

Chapter Summary 16: Narrative Continued by the Doctor: How the Ship was Abandoned

In this chapter, the good hands find and stock the stockade.

At the same time as Jim left the ship, the doctor, the captain, and the squire were talking about how they were helpless to start with and that now Jim had run away. They then decided to go ashore to learn more information. They quickly found a stockade that had a spring and defensive formations. The doctor rather liked the springs because they had no water. As they looked around, they heard a deathly scream. They wasted no time getting back to the ship. When they got there, the doctor told his plan to the captain and worked out how to do the plan. They then set the plan into motion and told the 6 men on deck that if they tried to make a signal then they would be shot. They then loaded up a boat with as many supplies as they could take and headed for the island. They then dropped the supplies off at the stockade and left someone to guard them. They went back to the ship and reloaded the boat. They then recruited one more man and quickly sailed away. 

Chapter Summary 15: The Man of the Island

In this chapter, Jim meets Ben Gunn.

Jim suddenly sees a dark and shaggy figure leap behind a tree. The figure catches up to Jim and explains that he is Ben Gunn and he was marooned. He also says that he dreamed of eating cheese. Jim decides to tell Ben the story of the whole voyage he had. After discussing a plan to get him off the island, Ben Gunn tells his story. Then cannon fired and Jim and Gunn ran towards the port.

Chapter Summary 14: The First Blow

In this chapter, Jim spies on Silver.

After Jim gave Long John Silver the slip, he explores around the island. As he explores he suddenly saw many birds fly up at once and hears human voices talking. Jim realizes that one of the voices was Long John Silver’s and listens in closer. Jim hears Silver criticize the men and then a cry of anger followed by a deathly scream. One of the men tries to leave the party but Silver kills him. Jim is so awestruck that he faints. When he recovers, Sliver is in the same position he was in before acting like normal. Then he blows his whistle as a signal and Jim fears more men will come, so he runs away to a forest.

Chapter Summary 13: How My Shore Adventure Began

In this chapter, Jim runs away.

The island is revealed to be very uniform and sad. When the men go to the island, they seem to be more lax. Jim finds this a bad sign because until then they had gone willingly about their business. When they arrive there, the island is quiet.  While on the island, the men seem to want to mutiny. However, Long John Silver is going along as normal. Later they have a council in the cabin where the captain explains if they try to order the men anymore, the men would rebel. They decide to let the men spend the afternoon ashore. All of the men agreed. It suddenly occurred to Jim that he should go ashore also. When he got to shore, he ran off into the night.

Chapter Summary 12: Council of War

In this chapter, Jim, the captain, Dr. Livesey, and the squire discuss an escape plan.

After Jim makes it out of the barrel; everyone meets together on the deck. Then the captain asks if anyone has seen Treasure Island before.  Long John Silver says that he has when he was a trader. Then Captain Smollett says that he has a chart and Long John Silver tries to memorize the map, but realizes that it is not the original. Then Long John Silver lays his arm on Jim's and says that the island is a good place for a lad like him to go. Jim then tries to tell new news to the doctor, the squire, and the captain. After he has told them, the squire admits he was wrong and the captain points out that they have a slight advantage of how to deal with it. They then talk about a plan to escape the oncoming danger.

Chapter Summary 11: What I heard in the Apple Barrel

In this chapter, it is revealed that Silver plans mutiny.

Long John Silver then says to a ship hand the very same words that he used to complement Jim and Jim is infuriated. Long John Silver then talks about gentlemen of fortune which meant a pirate. Long John Silver then butters up the ship hand and reveals his plan to get all of the gold and kill anyone who gets in their way. Then suddenly the lookout shouts, "Land ho!"

Chapter Summary 10: The Voyage

In this chapter, they set sail.


Finally after working all into the night, they set sail for Treasure Island. It turned out that the officer was worse than the captain had feared because he didn't command the people at all, people did what they pleased with him and he was often drunk. Then later on the voyage, the officer disappeared forever. Long John Silver was also popular among the crew. Long John Silver then tells Jim about his parrot he named Captain Flint who can speak very well. The squire and the captain also do not like each other very well. The crew was also very spoiled because if it was any man's birthday he would get a barrel of apples. However, one day Jim had done all of his work and wanted an apple. He went to the barrel, crawled inside and found there were no apples left. He then went to sleep and later woke up when the barrel shook and he heard Long John Silver speaking.

Chapter Summary 9: Powder and Arms

In this chapter, Jim meets the crew and hears Captain Smolett express his concerns.


After the interesting meeting with Long John Silver in chapter 8, Jim sees the ship and gets to see the rest of the crew. Then Captain Smollett asks to speak with them. He expresses his concerns that the men are not good and his officer does not seem too good. After making a few more recommendations, the captain asks to have the secret of who has the map stay secret. And with that, he ended the conversation. 

Chapter Summary 8: At the Sign of the Spy-glass

In this chapter, Jim meets with Long John Silver and Jim sees the Black Dog.

Long John Silver requests to see Jim at the Spy Glass Inn. When Jim arrives, his fears are put to rest that this could be the one-legged man that the captain was talking about because Long John Silver is nice and kind to him. Then in the middle of their conversation a man jumps up and runs out of the inn.  Jim recognizes him as “Black Dog.” Then Jim and some others chase after him. However, “Black Dog” manages to escape again and Jim's suspicions are aroused again that Silver could be the one-legged man that the captain was talking about. But then Long John Silver tells a joke and both of them laugh until it's time to go to the ship. When they meet up with the squire and Dr. Livesey, Long John Silver tells the story from beginning to end and they go to see the ship.

Chapter Summary 7: I Go to Bristol

In this chapter, everyone prepares for the trip.

After the exciting revelation in chapter 6, Jim, the squire, and Dr. Livesey begin to prepare for the trip to get the treasure. However, some of their plans did not go the way they were supposed to. Jim spends his days dreaming about strange islands and adventures and looking constantly at the map remembering every detail. Weeks pass by until finally a letter arrives from the squire saying that everything was going perfectly. It was also revealed in the letter that the squire spilled the beans about the treasure, even though he said he would keep it a secret. The letter also says that the squire a one-legged man, Long John Silver, to be the ship's cook. It even says that Jim can stay with his mother for one night and that Jim should come as soon as possible. Then Jim goes back to the Admiral Benbow and finds out that it had been repaired. After saying good-bye to his mom, Jim sets off for the port where there ship is. When he arrives there, Jim finds out that they leave the next day.

Chapter Summary 6: The Captain's Papers

In this chapter, Jim meets with Dr. Livesey and the squire and discovers a treasure map.

After that Jim rode to Dr. Livesey's house, he meets with him and Mr. Trelawney, the squire. The doctor asks if Jim has the packet. Jim gives it to him.  Then they have dinner and discuss it more. They then open the packet to find a lot of unintelligible writing. They find a map showing an island in detail and find out that it is a treasure map telling where treasure is buried. The doctor then expresses concern that the squire will spill the beans about the treasure. 

Chapter Summary 5: The Last of the Blind Man

In this chapter, the marauders trash the inn and the blind man dies.

Right after they reached the bridge in chapter 4, seven marauders, including the blind man, break down the door to the inn. They find out the captain is dead and that the chest has been looted. Then the blind man gets so mad that he says, "I wished I had put his eyes out," referring to Jim. The marauders then spread out and search for Jim and his mom. The marauders then start to quarrel amongst themselves and then horses come. Then all of the marauders, except the blind man run away. As the blind man tries to get away he is run over by horses and killed. Then both Jim, his mom and the rider go back to the Admiral Benbow Inn only to find it trashed. The rider then asks what the marauders were looking for and Jim tells him that they were probably looking for the oilskin packet he has. He then asks to go to Dr. Livesey to show him the packet.

Chapter Summary 4: The Sea-chest

In this chapter, Jim and his flee for their lives.

Following the sudden death of both the captain and Jim's father in chapter 3, Jim told his mother everything he knew. Then Jim and his mom go to the hamlet and try to get the people there to help Jim and his mom get their money back that the captain owed them. They did not get anyone to go with them, but they gave Jim and his mom a loaded pistol and promised to have horses ready. After that they loot the captain's body taking a key, what the captain owed them and an oilskin packet. Then they both ran off into the night fearing for their lives.

Chapter Summary 3: The Black Spot

In this chapter, Jim meets the blind man and the captain dies.

After the dramatic twist in chapter 2, the captain thanks Jim for helping him and rejects the doctor's instructions to not have any more rum saying "I lived on rum." Jim finds out that the "Black Dog" is actually far from the captain's friend, he is an enemy. Sadly, Jim's father dies the next afternoon. As the days go on, the captain grows weaker and weaker. Then one day a blind man comes down the street asking where he is. When Jim tells him, the blind man suddenly grabs his arm and threatens to break his arm if he doesn't lead him to the captain. Once Jim does, the blind man commands Jim to give the captain's left hand to the blind man and both of them obey. Then the blind man leaves and then the captain dies violently from a stroke. Jim is very sorrowful to have 2 very recent deaths.

Chapter Summary 2: Black Dog Appears and Disappears

In this chapter, the Black Dog and the captain clash.

Following the events in chapter 1, Jim's father gets sick from the cold winter weather and Jim and his mother must take care of the shop. Also, one day when the captain goes to the beach, an odd man comes looking for the captain calling him "Bill". He surprised the captain and is revealed to have the nickname "Black Dog." The captain and the "Black Dog" then argue like mad, saying oaths, and a sword fight ensues. Right when the "Black Dog" is about to die he escapes wounded. Then, suddenly, the captain has a stroke from too much rum, but Dr. Livesey manages to come by in the nick of time to save him. 

Chapter Summary 1: The Old Sea Dog at the Admiral Benbow

In this chapter, Jim meets the captain.



The book opens with Jim Hawkins telling why he is writing the story about his adventures on Treasure Island. Jim Hawkins story starts with a seaman going into an inn singing, "Fifteen men on the dead man's chest Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!" The seaman claims to be a captain.  Jim is drawn into this adventure when the captain asks him to keep a "weather-eye open for a seafaring man with one leg" for a silver fourpenny every month. The captain stays at the inn and tells a horrible tale every night.
