In this chapter, it is revealed that Silver plans mutiny.
Long John Silver then says to a ship hand the very same words that he used to complement Jim and Jim is infuriated. Long John Silver then talks about gentlemen of fortune which meant a pirate. Long John Silver then butters up the ship hand and reveals his plan to get all of the gold and kill anyone who gets in their way. Then suddenly the lookout shouts, "Land ho!"
